Love The Weekend Episode 003 (16th February 2005)

And so, LTW were left flying the flag! With no DJSR left, suddenly, LTW took centre stage. It was the official station of the UK Trance Alliance forums by this time, and with many DJSR DJs now with nowhere to spin, many of them came over to help bulk up the schedule a bit.

LTW was a more trance-flavoured station, with some very talented individuals on their books, with a very anarchic and laid-back feel to it. The forums were relatively quiet (most places were, compared to DJ Source) but the whole set-up was unregimented, and so spontenaity was the name of the game really. Many of the sets I did here weren’t planned, advertised, or even regulated by any kind of schedule, but for me, it only adds to their charm 🙂

LTW Episode 03

DJSR Farewell Session (15th February 2005)

This was the day that the worst thing possible happened. News spread this day that one of our competitors, Rise FM, was being forced to shut down on short notice as a result of a copyright legal notice.

As I said before, the land of internet radio was still in its’ early stages at this point, and the legal ramifications of running a station and the implications of broadcasting the music hadn’t been fully explored. But nonetheless, since DJSR was a voluntary station, run by the ever-agreeable workaholic Carl Briggs for no return, the last thing we wanted was a lawsuit being shoved in our faces.

So what happened was, Carl decided that the station should close down whilst the details were ironed out and we explored what all the options were. So here we were on a Tuesday night and the servers were being taken offline from midnight, so everyone who’d been involved with the station over the previous year, all of us devastated by the news, we all got together online that evening for a session, where some of us played what we thought might be our final ever sets online for DJSR.

And this was my set, and it’s still one of my favourite short sets – extravagant in its’ cross-fading, fidgety on the mixer, I think the kind of frantic nature of the situation is transferred well! I do wish I had some of the other sets from this same night though, it was an altogether legendary evening considering I never left the house! 🙂

Modern Classics II – The Rebirth Session Episode 028 (11th February 2005)

And this was the second, and the longest, of my Modern Classics series. It’s also missing a bit at the end, since this was the day I first learned of the “2gig of wav” rule.

I record all my mixes onto my PC using a program called Magix, and it records in wav, which I then convert to 192 mp3 for all my sets. However, the program can only record a maximum of 2 gigabytes of wav at any one time – that much, as I learned this day, equates to 3 hours, 22 mins and 7 seconds.

There was actually another pile of records I was going to continue with, but this is as far as the recording got to. In the end I chose to simply do a part 3 😉

Beyond The Shadows – The Rebirth Session Episode 027 (4th February 2005)

In the greater scheme of things, this wasn’t one of my favourites of all my demos, probably because it’s sandwiched inbetween two others that are! Some of the tunes just don’t quite work where they go, I reckon, but then I’m insanely picky like that.

The name for this one has quite a long history with me really. Back when I was much younger I used to avidly play computer games on my Spectrum 48k rather than my PC or XBox. One of my favourite games for this was called Avalon, even though I didn’t fully understand it and never managed to finish it!

Anyway, as part of the booklet and manual that went with the game, was this poem on pretend parchment which I thought was really good when I was 8 years old! The first verse went:

Beyond the shadows of the sun
Where countless alien realms are hung
The lord of earth reached out in dread
To claim his tribute from the dead
His horn sounds out his warning cry
The wild hunt thunders across the sky.

When I made my first “artist album” (I use the term loosely, but that’s a story for another day) I originally called it “Beyond The Shadows Of The Sun”, only to later abbreviate it to “Beyond The Shadows”. Since I believed the “album” would go unheard forever and only I’d ever really know, I had no qualms in borrowing the title for this demo!
