Can’t Take The Sky – The Rebirth Session Episode 207 – Crystal Clouds 9th Birthday mix (31st August 2012)

The second half of August was insanely busy for me, what with Defcon Day to sort out – not to mention my mix for it – Ibiza to finalise and arrange, various other guest mixes as well as my regular Rise Above and Back From The Dead duties. As such, I decided to combine two of my obligations by recording my 3 hour guest mix for the Crystal Clouds 9th Birthday Event as my latest Rebirth Session and demo mix.

This means that there isn’t a “one more” on the end as there normally would be, and the CD demo mix version of this would end with Ride The Moon as the final track. It’s a minor point, I suppose, that will likely only bother someone as ridiculously OCD about such things as I am! But rest assured I’m sure the demo mixes will be back in their usual format come the next time around, whenever that turns out to be. Since this is demo mix number 48 it means number 50 is just around the corner, which in the back of my mind has always been the sort of vague goal I had with them. I might possibly do my 50th demo mix as a kind of special one in some way, I’m not sure – it might well turn out that like this one that I’ll be too busy with something else and have to fashion in some late plan anyway!

The title for this one stems from the fact that my wife and I are both Whedonites, and since I did my last demo mix we’d re-watched the entire series of Firefly again. Hard to believe it’s been off the air a decade, but I’ll not bore you with my thoughts on that or other TV letdowns (the Lost finale, for example) or we’ll be here all night…

Accident Of Fate – The Rebirth Session Episode 205 (13th May 2012)

Wasn’t entirely happy with the last one so took a bit longer getting in the mood for this one! Really, really pleased with the result as well, I already think it might be one of my favourites 🙂

The reason behind the title, I was trying to thing of strange coincidences and examples of things happening at insane odds, since I’d bet £5 on QPR to beat Man City earlier that day for the final game of the season, an 18-1 shot. Even though it never quite happened (albeit only a couple of minutes away) it still made me think about how sometimes insane odds are overcome to produce something amazing pretty much by accident, and it reminded me how I feel about Defcon, and how we’ve been so lucky to wind up working with so many of the wonderful producers who in turn make up a massive part of this mix 🙂

In The End – The Rebirth Session Episode 198 (13th February 2011)

First demo mix of the new year! Bit late getting this one online for various reasons, apologies for that. Hopefully it’ll be another year as prolific as last though, fingers crossed! 🙂

It’s not as proggy as some of my other recent demos, that’s not intentional, it’s just the way it goes. When I do these demos I basically pick out all the tunes I want to play and then go through a gruelling shortlisting/editing process until it’s whittled down to 27/28 or so, before putting them into order. I never think “oooh, I need another proggy tune” or “oooh, I’d best put a vocal track in there” or anything. Nor, as you’ve probably gathered over the previous 450 mixes or so, do I really do the whole “filler track” philosophy. Never got that, to be honest, why on earth would you want to play a track that’s not as good as the others you’re playing in the set?

Anyway, I digress. Hope you like it, cos that’s the only thing that really matters 🙂
